What is the purpose of a seatbelt?

The primary purpose of a seatbelt is to protect occupants during a crash. When a vehicle is involved in a collision, the forces generated can throw passengers around and cause serious injuries. A seatbelt is designed to hold the driver and passengers securely in their seats, preventing them from being ejected out of the vehicle or colliding with the interior parts of the car, such as the steering wheel, dashboard, or windows. By restraining the occupants, seatbelts significantly reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of an accident.

While comfort and seat adjustment are important aspects of vehicle safety and ergonomics, they do not represent the main purpose of a seatbelt. Similarly, limiting passenger movement can be a secondary effect of seatbelt use, but the primary goal remains the protection of life and health during a collision.
